Open Water Diver Course Information

Start your diving adventure with the Open Water Diver Course at Manta Dive, Gili Trawangan: the ideal starting point for beginner divers. Discover the incredible marine life underwater in Gili Trawangan while acquiring the skills to dive worldwide up to a depth of 18 meters.

This comprehensive dive course is divided into three essential parts: interactive digital theory, practical training in the pool, and four open water dives at our beginner-friendly dive sites around the Gili Islands.

Your first day combines learning essential dive theory with a hands-on introduction to your diving equipment. Guided by our expert instructors, you’ll then move on to pool sessions where you’ll get comfortable breathing underwater and learn to master the essential diving skills and techniques needed as an Open Water Diver.

Days two and three are where the real adventure begins: four open water dives in the sea. Here, you will apply the diving skills learned in the pool, surrounded by the vibrant marine life of the Gili Islands. You will improve general diving skills like buoyancy control while enjoying the underwater world of corals, turtles, stingrays, moray eels, white tip reef sharks, countless fish species, and much more.

Completing the course earns you the SSI (Scuba Schools International) Open Water Diver certification, a worldwide recognized diving license that allows you to dive up to a depth of 18 meters while accompanied by a dive buddy of a similar or higher certification level. This is equivalent to the PADI Open Water diving license, which has been known simply as "getting my PADI" over the years.

Open Water Course Prerequisites

Before you start your Open Water Course, take a look at the following prerequisites:

  • You must be able to swim; there is a swim test in the course.

  • There is a medical questionnaire to complete. If you are taking any medication or have had any heart, lung, or ear problems, you may need to have your doctor sign off before you can dive. This needs to be arranged before your arrival. Simply contact us for a questionnaire if you are unsure about your medical history and have any questions about the possibility of diving.

Things to Note for Junior Divers:

  • For students up to 12 years old, the depth is limited to a maximum of 12 meters.

  • Students younger than 15 years old will be certified as Junior Open Water Divers and must dive under the direct supervision of a dive professional or with a certified adult in environments equivalent to their training and depth limits.
