Double Fun Dive in Cenotes (Angelita and Carwash)

A cenote is a geological formation characteristic of the Yucatan Peninsula, which originated over thousands of years. Its formation is indirectly linked to the impact of the Chicxulub meteorite, which fell in the region 66 million years ago, creating a huge crater and fracturing the earth's crust. These fractures allowed rainwater to infiltrate the limestone rock, a very porous type of rock in the area, over time. This process of slow erosion created underground caverns that eventually collapsed, giving rise to the cenotes. Although the meteorite contributed to this phenomenon, the cenotes were formed much later, due to the gradual dissolution of the rock by water. Today, these crystal clear water holes are both a geological legacy and a fascinating destination for diving and nature lovers.

Cenote Angelita
Cenote Angelita is one of the many hidden treasures of the Riviera Maya, located about 17 km south of Tulum, only a 30 minute drive away. This fascinating natural sinkhole is distinguished by its unique formation, which makes it a must-see destination for the most adventurous divers. With a depth of up to 60 metres and a maximum recommended dive level of 40 metres, Angelita offers an unusual diving experience due to the presence of a halocline, a layer that separates fresh and salt water, creating a stunning visual effect.
Level: Advanced
Max Depth: 40m
Distance: 30min drive
Recently, this cenote has gained greater visibility thanks to the work of Russian photographer Anatoly Beloshchin, who has managed to capture spectacular images of the halocline. His photos, which show the mysterious phenomenon of an underwater ‘cloud’ created by sulphur compounds, are making their way around the world. The amazing thing is that once you dive below this cloud, the natural light completely vanishes, and the only way to continue exploring is by the illumination of your dive light, adding an air of mystery and adventure to the experience.
Cenote Carwash
The Cenote Carwash, officially called Cenote Aktun Ha, is a stunning open-air cenote that offers a fascinating underwater world, full of rock formations, fauna and lush vegetation. This cenote, located in Tulum, is especially known for its crystal clear waters, making it an ideal place for swimming and snorkelling. It is also home to a crocodile! Its deep cave attracts divers of all levels looking to explore life beneath the surface.
The name ‘Cenote Carwash’ comes from its curious past. Located a few metres off the main road between Tulum and Cobá, this cenote used to be used by local drivers to wash their cars due to its easy access, earning it the nickname ‘Carwash’. Today, although it is no longer used to clean vehicles, it remains a popular destination for those wishing to enjoy natural beauty and underwater adventure.
