Enter a surreal world…
“Cenote” is a Maya word for a deep hole formed when the ground, typically limestone, collapses, exposing the water beneath the surface.
The Mexican cenotes were formed thousands of years ago and have been the primary source of drinking water in Yucatán for centuries. Some also played a role in Maya religious ceremonies.
Among the numerous and amazing cenotes where diving is possible on the Yucatán Peninsula, the ANGELITA cenote is certainly special: a deep sinkhole completely open at the top, featuring a thick layer of hydrogen sulfide at around 100 feet / 30 meters, formed by decaying vegetation, which separates the fresh water from the saltwater below.
From this opaque artificial-looking surface, the collapsed cave ceiling rises like a crescent-shaped island with trees growing on it.
Suitable ONLY for EXPERIENCED DIVERS, the tour offers 2 dives; Angelita is the first deep multi-level dive, beginning with a direct descent into a surreal landscape down to around 30m / 100ft where the layer starts… as you pass through it, the light disappears and your dive light becomes necessary.
A slow ascent, making circles around the gigantic cylinder, will complete the experience with a safety stop.
Completely different scenes are offered by the second dive in the Car-wash cenote.
A shallow cave partially connected to external light, where you’ll dive around stalactites and stalagmites, observing fossil and geological structures, floating through the rain of light.
During the summer months, there is a spectacular effect created by algae overgrowth, and at other times of the year, the tannic acid-loaded water flows into the cenote, creating a thick layer of orange-green color on the surface that can drastically reduce visibility. But as you descend, after about 2-3m / 6-10ft, the water suddenly becomes crystal clear, and the view of water lilies, tree branches, and roots creates a cool effect of an underwater forest, making this site very popular among photographers.
