Dive in Santa Marta: Exploring Tayrona Park
Dive Site: Isla Aguja, located within Tayrona National Park. It's an ideal site for divers of all levels, with a wide variety of marine life and rock formations.
Dive Profile:
Depth: 5-18 meters
Current: Moderate to strong, depending on the time of year.
Visibility: Generally good, although it can vary depending on conditions.
Marine Life: A wide variety of tropical fish, hard and soft corals, sponges, starfish, and occasionally sea turtles.
Dive Description:
We will begin the dive by descending along an anchor line towards a coral reef. As we enter the reef, we can observe a wide variety of corals in different shapes and colors, such as brain coral, elkhorn coral, and sea fans. Among the corals, we will find a large number of tropical fish, such as clownfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, and parrotfish.
As we move along the reef, we can observe interesting rock formations, cracks, and caves where various marine species hide. It is common to find schools of small and large fish, such as barracuda and jackfish.
If we are lucky, we may spot sea turtles, which can often be found feeding on the seagrass near the reef. It is also possible to see rays and other larger marine animals.
Recommendations:
Equipment: It is important to bring a flashlight to explore the cracks and caves. An underwater camera will allow you to capture the most special moments of the dive.
Precautions: Respect the environment, do not touch the corals or disturb the animals. Keep a safe distance from sea turtles and other large animals.
Guide: It is recommended to do the dive with a local guide who knows the area well and can point out the points of interest.
Additional Notes:
Time of year: The best time to dive in Santa Marta is during the dry season, between December and April, when the waters are clearer and the currents are gentler.
Other dive sites: In addition to Isla Aguja, other popular dive sites in Santa Marta include El Cantil in Bahía Granate, Tayrona Reefs, and Taganga.
