ABOUT THE SS THISTLEGORM:
Special program for the SS Thistlegorm wreck.
The SS Thistlegorm was a British Navy ship built in 1940. Its fourth and final voyage began in May 1941 in Glasgow, Scotland. It was heading to Alexandria, Egypt, carrying crucial supplies for the British Army’s 8th Division.
The ship was transporting ammunition, trucks, motorcycles, steam locomotives, airplane engine covers, and more. In the early hours of October 6, 1941, it was attacked by two German Heinkel HE 111 bombers, which dropped two 2-ton bombs on its fourth cargo hold, near the engine room, where the ammunition was stored.
The explosion was violent, destroying most of the ammunition on board and one of the ship’s boilers. Split in two, the Thistlegorm sank and rested on the seabed, standing upright except for the aft section, which was slightly tilted.
In the Shaa'b Ali area, at a depth of 30 meters, Jacques-Yves Cousteau discovered the wreck for the first time in 1955. Using his first underwater camera, he documented this incredible find. These images would later appear in the famous documentary Le Monde du Silence and in a National Geographic magazine article in 1956, making the Thistlegorm a famous wreck before it was forgotten. It was rediscovered in the 1970s and kept as a secret site until the early 90s, when publications in British and Italian magazines, such as Diver and Aqva, made it one of the most famous and sought-after wrecks in the world.
