What is the Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to expand on the skills learned in the Open Water Diver program. 

The Advanced Open Water Diver course is the next level after completing the Open Water Diver course. If you enjoyed the first course and want to continue expanding your knowledge of the diving world, you're in the right place. It is considered the most fun diving course of all, since you will complete different adventure dives acquiring knowledge about the different branches of scuba diving. 

The course is composed as follows; 2 compulsory specialties and 3 to choose from. Each of them will have a theoretical section and a practical part.

What do you learn in the course?

During the PADI Advanced Scuba Diver course, you will complete five adventure dives. These dives focus on specific areas of diving, such as underwater navigation, deep diving and underwater photography.

Underwater navigation dive

In this dive, you will learn how to use an underwater compass and navigate underwater. You will learn how to plan dive routes and follow them accurately.

Deep Dive Dive

In this dive, we explore the depth of the ocean. You will learn how to plan and conduct deeper dives safely, and how to use decompression techniques.

Underwater photography dive

In this dive, you will learn underwater photography techniques. You will learn how to use cameras and lighting equipment to capture images of marine life.

Buoyancy dive

In this dive, you will learn to control your buoyancy underwater. You will learn techniques to improve your buoyancy and through this, reduce air consumption and improve diving safety.

Species identification dive

In this dive, you will learn to identify different species of marine life. You will learn about the different habitats and behaviors of animals underwater.

Other adventure dives to choose from 

The range is very wide and the offer of these dives will depend on the center where they will take place. A maximum of three should be chosen, but the most popular among divers are the following:

  • Night Dive 
  • Nitrox 
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy 
  • Search and recovery 
  • Underwater photography 
  • Dry Suit 
  • Drift diving 
  • Diving Propulsion vehicle (DPV)

What is included in the course?

The PADI Advanced Diver course includes course material, 2 or more open water dives (depending on adventure dives selected), full scuba equipment, certified guide/instructor, safety briefing and certification fees.

How long does it take?

 The length of the course depends on the dive center, but it usually lasts between 3 to 4 days approximately.

What is the depth of the course?

Maximum depth in open water: 30 meters (21 meters if you are between 12 and 14 years old).

Who can take the course?

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is available to any diver with previous Open Water Diver experience and with a minimum age of 12 years old.

Where can I take the course?

The Advanced Open Water Diver Course can be taken at any authorized dive center. These centers have certified instructors who will guide you at all times during the learning process.

What are the requirements to obtain the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification?

To obtain the PADI - Advanced Open Water Diver certification, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have Open Water Diver certification or equivalent, previous experience, and at least 12 years of age.
  • Knowledge development and adventure dives.
  • Adventure dives: five in total, including one deep dive and one underwater navigation dive, and three more from a list of options.
