Diving in Cala Vidre

The beautiful Cala Vidre in Sant Jordi de Alfama is a true paradise for lovers of diving and underwater nature. This charming cove is located on the Mediterranean coast, near the town of Sant Jordi de Alfama, in a privileged area with crystal-clear waters and rich marine biodiversity.

Information:

  • Dive sites: This cove offers us two differentiated dive zones, which are shallow and accessible from the shore. One entering to the left and the other to the right.

  • Following the headland of the Sant Jordi castle (left): We will advance along the sandy bottom following the wall full of cavities where you can observe the rich diversity of the area.

  • In the direction of Cala Forn (right): This dive is less deep but no less beautiful. Along the way we will find rock formations with cavities, two of them accessible.

Water conditions: The diving conditions in Cala Vidre are generally favorable for much of the year. The waters are clear and calm, with visibility usually exceeding 15 meters. However, as in any diving location, it is important to be aware of weather conditions and currents, especially in the winter months when they can be more intense.

Marine biodiversity: When we dive into the waters of Cala Vidre, we will be surprised by the diversity of marine species that inhabit its seabed. We will find a great variety of Mediterranean fish, such as groupers, sea breams, white breams and damselfish, among others. In addition, you can admire colorful corals and algae that make up a marine ecosystem of great beauty.

Diving in Cala Sant Jordi

This beautiful fine sand cove located on the Costa Dorada, specifically in l'Ametlla de mar, is a paradise for diving enthusiasts. Its crystal-clear waters and rich underwater biodiversity make this place an essential destination for underwater enthusiasts. Here is a brief briefing with important information to make the most of your dives in Cala Sant Jordi.

Dive information:

  • The beach has showers and is accessible by stairs that descend from the car park of the Sant Jordi d'Alfama Castle.

  • The dive from the beach is done by following the headland of the Sant Jordi castle: We will enter the water from the southern part of the cove, we will advance along the sandy bottom keeping the wall on our right hand. We will find multiple cavities in the wall where we can observe the rich diversity of the area, two of these cavities are accessible.

Water conditions: The diving conditions in Cala Sant Jordi are generally excellent throughout the year. The water temperature varies between 15°C and 25°C, so it is recommended to wear a 5mm neoprene suit to ensure a comfortable experience. Visibility is usually amazing, reaching up to 30 meters on clear days, which will allow you to appreciate marine life in all its splendor.

Marine biodiversity: When diving in the waters of Cala Sant Jordi we will find a great variety of Mediterranean fish, such as groupers, sea breams, white breams and damselfish, among others. In addition, you can admire colorful corals and algae that make up a marine ecosystem of great beauty.

Diving in Cala Llobeta

Cala Llobeta is located on the beautiful coast of Calafat, in Tarragona. This area is full of coves, among which stands out the small and picturesque cove of Llobeta, known by divers as an area of great natural beauty and calm waters that allow you to enjoy a good dive surrounded by the rich marine life of the Mediterranean.

To get there by land, go to the Calafat Urbanization, enter the main road and go down the dirt road that is on the right hand side, right next to the small parish church. At the end of the road you can park next to the showers, get ready and walk about 100 m of sand until you enter the water.

Dive information:

  • Oriented to the E (120º) this cove offers us a wide dive area.

  • The dive begins by entering the water and maintaining a heading of 120º, crossing a white sand bed and after a short journey, at a depth of approximately 5 meters, there is a small but beautiful arch that we can go through.

  • Leaving the arch, turn to 150º until you find a 1m high wall at a depth of approximately 7 meters. Follow the wall, which is getting higher and higher, to entertain yourself by looking for the marine fauna that hides in its cavities (octopus, nudibranchs, etc.)

  • At approximately 12m deep, the wall turns 90º to the left and, at the bottom, a small hole opens up allowing you to observe the other side.

  • Continue a little, until it is possible to skirt the wall at 180º and find a rock formation full of cavities and marine life such as groupers...

  • You can return by the same route or over the wall through the Posidonia meadow.

  • Night Diving: Cala Llobeta is a perfect place for night diving, where you can observe the nocturnal activity of fish and marine creatures, such as hermit crabs and octopuses hunting under the light of your flashlight.

Water conditions: The weather conditions in Cala Llobeta are usually favorable for diving for much of the year. Summers are hot and sunny, with water temperatures around 25°C, allowing for comfortable diving with a light wetsuit. During the winter, temperatures can drop, but diving is still possible with a thicker wetsuit.

Marine biodiversity: When we dive into the waters of Cala Llobeta, we will be surprised by the diversity of marine species that inhabit its seabed. We will find a great variety of Mediterranean fish, such as groupers, sea breams, white breams, damselfish, among others, and also sea urchins, octopuses and starfish.

Diving in Cala Calafat

Cala Calafat (Cala Calafató) de l'Ametlla de Mar is a hidden gem on the Catalan coast. The crystal-clear waters, golden sandy beaches and impressive cliffs make this place one of the best diving spots in Catalonia.

Brief briefing:

  • Oriented to the SSE, this cove offers a wide dive area. Perfectly nestled between the rock walls, this cove allows us to enter the water slowly, crossing its shallow, white sand bottom. At the end of the natural rock shelter, the depth reaches 3-4m.

  • We go out to sea in the direction of 150º and at a depth of about 5m we find an arch that we can go through. The landscape we find is a rich Posidonia meadow that grows everywhere and covers the rocks scattered throughout the seabed. The rocks are separated by sandy corridors that create tunnels that we can pass through.

  • Most of the dive takes place at a depth of 11m. During the visit to this area we can explore innumerable small caves and grottoes where its abundant fauna takes shelter and we can even find a grotto where a statue of a dolphin and a marine nativity scene has been installed, known as the "Cova del dofí".

If we continue towards the open sea over the Posidonia meadow, we will find steps that will take us to a depth of approximately 17m where we will enter the sand again. We can make the return on our steps.

The best times for diving in this area are spring and summer, with water temperatures around 25°C, allowing for comfortable diving with a light wetsuit. During the winter, temperatures can drop, but diving is still possible with a thicker wetsuit.

Marine biodiversity: One of the reasons why Cala Calafató is so special is its incredible marine life. You will be able to see a great variety of fish, from the smallest and most colorful to larger species such as groupers and barracudas. There is also an abundance of corals and other marine organisms that will make your dive unforgettable.

Diving in Playa Vilafortuny

Vilafortuny Beach, located in Cambrils, is an ideal destination on the Costa Daurada. Known for its golden sand and services, this semi-urban beach is perfect for families and tourists. The services available include beach bars and recreational areas, ensuring a complete experience by the sea.

The dive point is located between Cambrils and Salou, in front of the Best Marítim Hotel. It is an area of great natural beauty and calm waters that allow you to enjoy the rich marine life of the Mediterranean.

Brief briefing:

The seabed in the area is mainly sandy and rocky, but there are also areas of Posidonia that make the dive very varied. Upon entering the water, we will head towards the islet that is right in front to start surrounding it on the right. Once we reach the outer part of the islet, a few meters away, we will find a one-meter high wall that we can follow to contemplate the life that has found its refuge in the area.

During the dive, it is common to see a varied Mediterranean fauna, including octopuses and numerous fish such as the wrasse, the sea bream, the mojarra, the cow bream...

Summers are hot and sunny, with water temperatures around 25°C, allowing for comfortable diving with a light wetsuit. During the winter, temperatures can drop, but diving is still possible with a thicker wetsuit.

Marine biodiversity: The seabed of Playa de Vilafortuny is home to a wide variety of marine species, including fish, crustaceans, molluscs and echinoderms. Among the most common fish are the wrasse, the damselfish, the sea bream, the sargo and the bogue. We can also find octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, anemones, sponges and corals.
