A cenote is a geological formation characteristic of the Yucatan Peninsula, which originated over thousands of years. Its formation is indirectly linked to the impact of the Chicxulub meteorite, which fell in the region 66 million years ago, creating a huge crater and fracturing the earth's crust. These fractures allowed rainwater to infiltrate the limestone rock, a very porous type of rock in the area, over time. This process of slow erosion created underground caverns that eventually collapsed, giving rise to the cenotes. Although the meteorite contributed to this phenomenon, the cenotes were formed much later, due to the gradual dissolution of the rock by water. Today, these crystal clear pools are both a geological legacy and a fascinating destination for diving and nature lovers.

El Pit Cenote

El Pit, located in the ejido Jacinto Pat, in the Xel-Ha area of the Riviera Maya in Tulum, Quintana Roo, is one of the most impressive and revered cenotes in the region. For the ancient Maya, this cenote had a profound significance, as they considered it the entrance to the underworld, giving it a sacred status.

The Pit is relatively young and its only entrance is a small hole in the roof of the cavern, approximately 10 metres in diameter. To enter, visitors descend steep wooden stairs that lead down into the crystal blue waters that characterise this cenote. The natural light coming through the hole creates an impressive visual spectacle, illuminating the rock formations underwater, but without reaching the bottom, which adds a touch of mystery to the experience.

  • Minimum level: Advanced Open Water

  • Max Depth: 30m

  • Distance: 20min drive from the centre

In its depths, two human skeletons over 10,000 years old have been discovered, making El Pit a site of great natural and historical importance. Once in the water, the interaction between the light and the waters creates a light show that highlights the beauty of the natural formations, making The Pit a must-see destination for advanced divers and nature lovers.

Cenote Dos Ojos

The Dos Ojos Cenote and Park is one of the most emblematic and visited destinations in Quintana Roo, famous for its underground cave system that extends for more than 80 kilometres, connecting with other cenotes in the region. This cenote receives its name due to the two large entrances that, seen from above, look like ‘eyes’ that invite you to explore its wonders.

Cenote Dos Ojos offers a breathtaking visual experience, especially inside its caverns, where crystal clear waters reveal spectacular rock formations and an underwater environment that seems otherworldly. With a depth that varies between 8 and 10 metres, this cenote is perfect for those who wish to snorkel and enjoy the company of fish swimming just metres from the surface.

As well as being ideal for snorkelling, Cenote Dos Ojos is a paradise for cavern divers, who can explore its wide galleries and immerse themselves in a mystical environment full of stalactites and stalagmites.

cenote dos ojos

The adventure begins when you decide which route to take, as there are 3 routes to explore; eye one, eye two and finally the cave of the bats.

The first eye is mainly focused on specialised and certified cave divers, as to reach it, you have to pass through a series of flooded and completely dark caves. The second eye and the bat cave are connected and are open areas suitable for snorkelling or just swimming and enjoying the waters. In this area you will also get an adrenaline rush as to go from the second eye to the bat cave you will have to go through a narrow path underwater and without light, where you will require the use of torches and the advice of a knowledgeable guide.
